CLB 9: Perfect Cloze
At CLB 9, you need 5 out of 5 on Part 4. With the right technique, this is very achievable - the audio directly provides each answer. You just need to catch it in real time.
The Real-Time Follow-Along
At CLB 9, you should be able to:
- Read ahead in the summary while the audio plays
- Track the audio's position relative to the summary
- Fill each blank the moment the audio reaches that point
This requires simultaneous reading + listening, which is a CLB 9 skill. Practice by following along with news transcripts while listening to the audio.
The key: The summary and audio are in the same order. Blank 1 is answered early, blank 5 is answered late. Never jump ahead or fall behind - stay synchronized.
Instant Paraphrase Recognition
At CLB 9, paraphrase matching should be instant:
- Audio: "was postponed to next quarter" โ Summary: "was _______ to a later date" โ Answer: "delayed" or "rescheduled"
- Audio: "roughly six hundred people" โ Summary: "approximately _____ individuals" โ Answer: "600"
Practice method: Listen to English news (BBC, CBC) while reading a different-wording summary. Train your brain to recognize the same fact in different clothes.
Review as Verification Only
At CLB 9, your review time should be verification, not discovery:
- Read the completed paragraph once - it should read as a natural, coherent news summary
- If any sentence sounds awkward, re-check that blank
- If all sentences flow naturally, you're done
Target: fill all 5 blanks during the audio with high confidence, use maybe 30 seconds of review time, then mentally prepare for Part 5.
