CLB 9: Zero Errors on Part 1
At CLB 9, you need 8 out of 8 on Part 1. This part is relatively straightforward compared to Parts 4โ6, so it should be a guaranteed perfect score.
The secret: every conversational exchange has one pivot moment โ the exact point where the speakers shift from discussing to deciding. If you catch that moment, the answer is clear.
The Pivot Moment
The pivot usually sounds like:
- "OK so here's what we'll do..." - "I think the best option is..." - "Let's just go with..." - "Actually, you know what, let's..."
Before the pivot = exploration (all options are on the table) After the pivot = decision (the answer is being stated)
Train yourself to listen for this transition. When you hear it, write down exactly what follows. That's your answer.
Implicit Rejection Detection
At CLB 9, rejections aren't always explicit. Watch for:
- Tone shifts: Enthusiastic โ hesitant = rejection - "That's interesting, but..." = polite rejection - Topic change without agreement: Moving to a new option without saying "yes" to the current one = implicit rejection - Qualifiers that kill: "That would be great IF we had more time" (they don't have more time, so it's rejected)
These soft rejections create the traps that separate CLB 8 from CLB 9. If you can hear what's being rejected without the word "no," you're at CLB 9 level.
Pre-Reading Mastery
At CLB 9, maximize the preview time:
1. Read ALL questions in your group before audio plays (yes, all of them) 2. Identify what type each question is: Who/What/When/Where/Why/How 3. Predict the conversation topic from the questions 4. Listen with a checklist: mentally tick off each question as you hear its answer
This approach means you're NEVER surprised by a question. You heard the answer during the audio because you already knew what to listen for.
Speed and Confidence
At CLB 9 level, each question should take 10โ15 seconds to answer, leaving buffer time:
- Read the options โ your notes already tell you the answer โ confirm โ next - If your notes are clear, don't second-guess - If two options seem close, re-read the question precisely โ the question wording usually eliminates one
Time bank: Finishing each group's questions quickly gives you mental reset time before the next audio segment.
