What Is Part 1?
Part 1 plays a conversation between two people discussing a problem and possible solutions. The audio plays once โ no rewind, no replay. You get 8 questions in 3 groups (Q1โ2, Q3โ5, Q6โ8), each with its own audio segment.
After each segment, you have 30 seconds per question to choose your answer before auto-advance. This part tests whether you can follow a conversation and pick out specific details.
The Quick-Note Method
You can't rely on memory alone for 8 questions. Use scratch paper:
1. Before audio plays, glance at the first 2 questions โ know what to listen for 2. While listening, jot 2โ3 key words per question (names, numbers, decisions) 3. Use abbreviations: "mtg" for meeting, "wk" for week, "โ" for leads to
What to note: - WHO is doing what (names + actions) - NUMBERS: dates, times, prices, quantities - DECISIONS: what they agree on, what they reject
At CLB 7, you don't need perfect notes โ just enough anchors to recall the conversation when answering.
Listen for the Solution, Not Just the Problem
Part 1 conversations always follow a pattern:
1. Person A describes a problem 2. They discuss 2โ3 possible solutions 3. They agree on one solution or compromise
Many CLB 7 test-takers get distracted by the problem description and miss the solution. The questions almost always ask about the decision โ what they chose to do, not what went wrong.
Tip: When you hear phrases like "Let's go with...", "I think we should...", "That sounds good", or "How about we..." โ that's the answer being stated.
Handle the 30-Second Timer
30 seconds per question sounds short but is enough if you're prepared:
- Don't re-read all options โ scan them quickly and look for the one matching your notes - First instinct is usually right โ don't overthink - If stuck between two, pick the one that matches the conversation's concluding tone - Never leave blank โ guess if you must; there's no penalty
Time trap: Spending 20 seconds on one question leaves only 10 for the next in the same group. Move quickly.
Common Mistakes at CLB 7
- Trying to read all questions before audio plays: You only have a few seconds. Read just the first 2. - Writing full sentences in notes: Use keywords only. "John โ library 3pm" is enough. - Picking the first option that sounds familiar: The CELPIP often mentions ALL options in the audio โ the right answer is the one they agreed on. - Panicking when you miss a detail: Let it go and focus on the next segment. You can still score 6/8 and be on track.
