Why Interface Familiarity Matters
CELPIP is 100% computer-based — there's no paper option. If you're not comfortable with the interface, you'll waste precious seconds (or minutes) figuring out where to click, how to navigate, and how things work.
Every second spent confused by the interface is a second stolen from answering questions. Take the free CELPIP practice test online (at celpip.ca) specifically to learn the interface before test day.
Key Interface Elements
Timer: Always visible in the top corner. Shows remaining time for the current part/task. Some parts have separate timers (Reading parts have individual timers). Watch it, but don't stare at it — check every 3–4 questions.
Navigation: Within a part, you can click "Next" and "Previous" to move between questions. In Listening, questions appear one at a time as the audio plays. In Reading, you can go back within a part.
Writing area: A simple text box with basic editing. You can: - Type normally - Use Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V for copy/paste - Use Ctrl+Z for undo - Select text with mouse or Shift+Arrow - There is no spell check — don't rely on red underlines
Speaking recording: A clear indicator shows when recording is active. A countdown timer shows your remaining response time. When the timer hits zero, recording stops automatically — even mid-sentence.
Section-Specific Interface Tips
Listening: - Audio plays through headphones. Adjust volume during the audio check — you can't change it mid-test. - Questions appear on screen. Click your answer. You can change it while the current part's timer is running.
Reading: - Passage appears on one side, questions on the other (split screen) - You can scroll the passage independently - Dropdown menus are used for cloze questions — click to see all options
Writing: - Word count is NOT displayed (unlike some practice tools). Practice estimating your word count visually. - The text box limits your response length, but the limit is generous — you won't hit it with a normal response.
Speaking: - After prep time, recording starts automatically with a beep - You'll see a waveform or recording indicator showing it's active - Speak at normal volume — don't shout or whisper - You can't re-record — once time's up, it's submitted
Pre-Test Practice
Mandatory: Take the free CELPIP practice test at celpip.ca before your real test. This lets you:
1. See the exact interface you'll use on test day 2. Practice navigating between questions 3. Get comfortable with the timer display 4. Test your typing speed in the writing box 5. Practice speaking into a microphone with recording
Familiarity reduces anxiety and prevents wasted time. Even 30 minutes with the practice test interface can save you 5+ minutes on test day — minutes that go directly into answering questions better.
