The CLB 10 Challenge in Part 3
At CLB 10, you need 9 out of 9 on Part 3. No margin. The question type that separates CLB 9 from CLB 10 is the scope-trap question โ where the answer is technically in the right section but the question asks about a slightly different scope or perspective.
Part 3 is where many strong readers lose their only mark. Fix this, and CLB 10 becomes achievable.
The Paragraph Index Method
Invest 3 minutes in a thorough mental index:
For each section (AโE), note: - Main topic (1โ2 words) - 2โ3 specific details mentioned - Any unique viewpoint or recommendation (if the section has one)
This index becomes your lookup table. When a question asks about a specific detail, you match it to your index entry, then verify in the text.
At CLB 10 reading speed, this investment eliminates the need to re-scan sections, saving time over the remaining 7 minutes.
Word-Level Precision on Tricky Questions
The scope-trap question works like this:
- Section B says: "The program benefits children aged 6โ12" - Section D says: "Youth programs are available for ages 10โ18" - Question: "Which section mentions support for teenagers?"
Both B and D mention young people. But "teenagers" (13โ18) is only covered by Section D's "ages 10โ18." Section B's "6โ12" explicitly excludes teens.
Fix: When you think you've found the answer, check the exact age/scope/qualifier in both the question and the section. One mismatched word = wrong answer.
Advanced Speed Strategy
At CLB 10, use saved time from Parts 1โ2 to give Part 3 up to 12 minutes:
- 3 minutes: Thorough first read and mental indexing - 7 minutes: Answer questions with word-level verification - 2 minutes: Review any uncertain answers
Your verification mantra: "Can I point to the exact sentence that proves this, and does that sentence say exactly what the question claims?"
If yes, confirm. If there's any doubt, re-read both the question and the supporting sentence one more time.
