Why Vocabulary Range Matters

CELPIP scores your lexical resource — the range and precision of your vocabulary. Using the same basic words repeatedly signals limited language ability. Swapping in more precise alternatives signals advanced proficiency.

The key: upgrades should feel natural, not forced. Don't use a fancy word you're unsure about. Use the upgrade only if you'd be comfortable seeing it in a sentence.

50 Instant Upgrades

The 80/20 Rule for Vocabulary

Don't try to use advanced vocabulary in every sentence. Follow the 80/20 rule:

- 80% of your writing: Use comfortable, clear vocabulary you know well - 20% of your writing: Sprinkle in 3–5 upgraded words strategically

Place your best vocabulary in three high-impact locations: 1. Opening sentence — your first impression 2. Topic sentences — the first sentence of each paragraph 3. Closing sentence — your last impression

Examiners notice the beginning and end most. A strong vocabulary frame around solid basic content is the optimal strategy.

Vocabulary Traps to Avoid

The thesaurus trap: Don't replace every word with a synonym you found online. "Utilize" works. "Facilitating the promulgation of" doesn't. If it sounds like you swallowed a dictionary, tone it down.

The repetition trap: Using the same advanced word 3 times in one response. Use each upgrade ONCE, then find a different way to express the same idea.

The misuse trap: "The weather was very crucial today" — "crucial" implies critical importance, not just notable. Make sure the upgraded word fits the context precisely.

Safe strategy: If you're unsure about a word, use the simpler version. A correct simple word scores better than an incorrect fancy word.
