What Is Part 5?
Part 5 presents two options (e.g., two vacation destinations, two activities, two proposals). You get 60 seconds to prepare (the longest prep time in the exam) and 60 seconds to speak.
Your job: choose one option and persuade the listener that it's the better choice. Some Part 5 prompts only require you to select an option without speaking.
The Compare-and-Choose Template
Opening (10 seconds): "After carefully considering both options, I would strongly recommend Option [A/B]. While both choices have their merits, I believe Option [A/B] is clearly the superior choice."
Why your choice is better (25 seconds): "The main advantage of this option is [reason 1]. This is particularly important because [explanation]. Furthermore, [reason 2]."
Why the other option is weaker (15 seconds): "Although Option [other] has some appeal, it falls short because [weakness]. This makes it less suitable for [the situation]."
Conclusion (10 seconds): "For these reasons, I am confident that Option [A/B] is the best choice and would lead to the most positive outcome."
This structure is decisive, organized, and fills 60 seconds perfectly.
Comparison Vocabulary
Essential phrases for comparing:
Your option is better: - "This option is far more practical" - "This is considerably more cost-effective" - "This offers a significantly better experience"
The other option is weaker: - "The main drawback of the alternative is..." - "One potential issue with the other option is..." - "While the other option may seem attractive, it lacks..."
Persuading: - "I would wholeheartedly encourage choosing..." - "There is no question in my mind that..." - "The advantages clearly outweigh any potential concerns"
Acknowledging (then dismissing): - "Granted, the other option has [one good point], but..." - "I understand the appeal of the alternative; however..."
The 60-Second Prep Advantage
You have a full minute to prepare โ the most of any part. Use it wisely:
- Seconds 1โ15: Read both options carefully. Identify 2 pros and 1 con for each. - Seconds 15โ30: Choose the option that's easier to argue for (not necessarily the one you'd actually choose). - Seconds 30โ60: Plan your 3 main points. Jot keywords: "cheaper, more fun, closer"
Pro tip: Choose the option with the most obvious advantages to argue. This is a language test, not a personality test.
