CELPIP Reading Part 2 โ€” Diagrams Aren't Hard (You're Just Reading Them Wrong)

Foundational strategies for CELPIP Reading Part 2. Learn to decode diagrams, cross-reference with email text, and answer cloze questions about applied information.

What Is Part 2?

Part 2 gives you two sources: a visual (diagram, map, schedule, price list, or chart) AND an email or short text. You have 9 minutes for 8 questions.

Some questions require information from only the diagram, some from only the text, and some require you to combine both sources. There are also cloze questions where you complete an email using dropdown menus.

Step 1: Examine the Diagram First

Before reading any text, spend 60โ€“90 seconds studying the diagram:

1. What type is it? Schedule, map, price list, flowchart, menu? 2. What are the headings/labels? These tell you what categories of information are available 3. What are the key numbers/dates/prices? Note them mentally 4. Is there a legend or footnote? Small print often contains important details

By understanding the diagram first, you'll know exactly where to look when a question references specific data.

Step 2: The Cross-Reference Technique

Many questions require combining information from both sources:

1. Read the question โ€” identify what information you need 2. Decide where it likely is: diagram, text, or both 3. Find it in the first source (e.g., a price from the diagram) 4. Verify or complete it with the second source (e.g., a condition from the email)

Example: The diagram shows gym membership prices. The email mentions a discount for early sign-up. The question asks: "What will John pay?" You need both the base price (diagram) and the discount (email).

Cloze Questions in Part 2

The cloze section here is an email with blanks. The answers often come from the diagram.

1. Read the cloze email paragraph fully 2. For each blank, check if the answer is a name, number, or date from the diagram 3. If not, it's likely a grammar word (preposition, connector) โ€” use sentence context 4. The cloze email usually summarizes the diagram in paragraph form

Think of it as retelling the diagram's information in an email โ€” each blank fills in a specific fact.

Time Management for Part 2

With 9 minutes for 8 questions:

- 90 seconds: Study the diagram - 2 minutes: Read the email/text - 5 minutes: Answer all 8 questions (~40 seconds each) - 30 seconds: Quick review

If you spend too long studying the diagram, you'll run out of time. The diagram is a reference โ€” you can look back at it while answering questions. Don't memorize it, just understand its structure.
