Part 1 at Mastery Level
At CLB 11โ12, Part 1 is your guaranteed full-score section. You need 35+ out of 38 total, which means perfect or near-perfect on every part. Part 1 is the easiest to perfect because the emails are short and the questions are relatively direct compared to Part 4.
Your goal: 11/11 in under 8 minutes, banking 3+ minutes for Parts 3 and 4.
The Single-Pass System
At this level, you should need only one read-through:
- Read the email exchange straight through - no question-first approach needed because your reading speed and comprehension are high enough
- After finishing, you'll have a complete mental model of who said what, why, and how they feel
- Answer all 6 comprehension questions in sequence - most answers will come immediately
- Complete all 5 cloze answers - at this level, the correct option should "feel" obviously right
If you hesitate on any answer for more than 15 seconds, flag it mentally and return after finishing the others. A fresh look often reveals the answer instantly.
Catching Sophisticated Traps
The only real danger at CLB 11โ12 is overconfidence. Traps at this level:
- The "close enough" answer: Two options that are both arguably correct, but one is more precise. Always choose the more specific answer that exactly matches the text.
- The misattribution: Attributing a sentiment to the wrong email or wrong person - stay careful about tracking who said what
- The assumption trap: An answer that WOULD be true based on common sense but isn't supported by the actual text
Rule: Never bring outside knowledge into your answer. Only use what the text actually states or clearly implies.
Speed Without Sacrifice
Optimal Part 1 flow at CLB 11โ12:
- 3 minutes: Read all emails (single pass, full comprehension)
- 2.5 minutes: Answer 6 comprehension questions
- 2 minutes: Complete 5 cloze
- 30 seconds: Quick verification of any flagged answer
- Total: ~8 minutes - banking 3 minutes for later parts
This time bank is crucial. Parts 3 and 4 have more questions and trickier distractors - the time you save here directly improves your score elsewhere.
