CLB 8 Challenge: Paraphrasing
At CLB 8, the summary paragraph doesn't use the exact same words as the audio. The news might say:
- Audio: "The mayor announced the construction of a new sports complex"
- Summary: "The city will build a new _______ facility"
The answer is "sports" - but the sentence structure is completely different. You need to match meaning, not words.
You need 4โ5 out of 5 correct.
The Meaning-Match Technique
For each blank, identify the concept being asked, not the exact word:
- Read the blank's sentence
- Ask: "What information is missing? What fact does this blank need?"
- During audio, listen for that fact expressed in any words
- Match the concept to the dropdown option
Example:
- Summary: "The event attracted _______ attendees"
- Audio: "Over two thousand people showed up"
- Answer: "more than 2,000" (not the exact audio wording, but the same fact)
Training yourself to think in concepts rather than word-matching is the CLB 8 upgrade.
Pre-Listening Dropdown Analysis
Before audio plays, open each dropdown and analyze the options:
- Are the options similar words? "reduced / eliminated / maintained / increased" โ listen for the direction of change
- Are the options numbers/quantities? โ listen for specific numbers
- Are the options names/places? โ listen for proper nouns
- Are the options time expressions? โ listen for when something happens
This analysis tells you exactly what listening mode to use for each blank: number-catching, name-catching, or direction-catching.
Review Time Optimization
At CLB 8, use the 150 seconds strategically:
- First 30 seconds: Read the completed paragraph - does it make sense as a coherent news summary?
- Next 90 seconds: Focus on uncertain blanks - re-read surrounding sentences for context clues
- Last 30 seconds: Final check - verify grammar matches for each answer
Context clue trick: If blank 3 seems uncertain, look at blanks 2 and 4. The paragraph tells a logical story - the answer for blank 3 must fit between what comes before and after.
