General Category Overview
The general Express Entry category is open to all eligible candidates in the pool. Unlike the specialty categories (French, healthcare, STEM, trades), the general category doesn't require specific occupations or language abilities beyond the minimum.
Who qualifies:
- Any occupation (as long as skilled level TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3)
- Any field of study
- Any work experience background
This is the largest pool, making it more competitive. General draws typically see CRS cutoffs of 480-510, compared to 400-450 for specialty categories.
Competitive CRS Scores
Typical competitive profile (2025-2026):
- Age: 20-29 years old (+110 points)
- Education: Bachelor's degree (+120 points)
- Language: CLB 8-9 in English (+92 to +124 points)
- Canadian work experience: 1-2 years (+40-53 points)
- Total baseline: ~370-410 CRS
To reach 480+ competitive range, you'd typically need:
- Transferability bonuses (up to +100 with CLB 9+ and education/experience combos), provincial nomination (+600), or French bilingual bonus (+25-50)
Bonus possibilities:
- French language: +25-50 CRS (also eligible for French category draws)
- Canadian study: +15-30 CRS
- Spouse language/education: +15-20 CRS
Many candidates spend 1-3 years enhancing their profile to become truly competitive in general draws.
Strategy to Improve Scores
Fastest improvements:
1. Language score (+40-50 CRS possible): Retake CELPIP/IELTS, target CLB 10-12
2. Canadian work experience (+20-30 CRS per year): Get any skilled job in Canada
3. Spouse language test (+15 CRS): Have spouse take language test
Medium-term improvements:
4. Canadian education (+15 CRS): 1-2 year Canadian diploma/degree
5. Additional certifications (+5-10 CRS): Industry credentials in demand
Most Gen candidates succeed by getting Canadian work experience (easiest to obtain) + highest possible language score (CELPIP recommended for English).
